The CalDAV side of Lion/iOS 5 does not support high ascii characters (like umlauts) as of this writing so Zulu is swapping these out for characters Lion understands. To keep Zulu fast, we're doing this on all transactions, not just those from Lion clients.
Here is the list of characters we're currently swapping out. If other high ascii characters are present we replace them with a space:
- ö -> oe
- ä -> ae
- ü -> ue
- Ä -> Ae
- Ö -> Oe
- Ü -> Ue
- ß -> ss
